Business:

Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) has bagged order worth Rs. 9,200 crore for supply of seven Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM) systems to Indian Navy. In this regard, it has entered into a contract with Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE). The LRSAM will be fitted onboard seven ships to be built by these two shipbuilders. This was highest-ever single value order bagged by BEL. This contract has pushed order book of BEL beyond Rs 50,000 crore for the first time in single financial year,
LRSAM has long-range engagement capability to penetrate deep water and land to intercept all types of aerial targets like subsonic and supersonic missiles, fighter aircraft, maritime patrolling aircraft (MPA), helicopter and sea skimming missiles. It is capable of
countering newest generation anti-ship missiles.

Day of Observation:
The International Day of Charity is observed globally on September 5 with an aim to recognise the role of charity in alleviating human suffering within and among nations, as well as to recognise the efforts of charitable organisations and individuals such as Mother Teresa.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 5 September as International Day of Charity on December 17, 2012 through its resolution A/RES/67/105PDF. The day was first celebrated in the year 2013.

Teachers’ Day is being celebrated throughout the country on the birthday (5th September 1888) of educationist and former President Bharat Ratna Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Dr. Radhakrishnan was India’s first vice president and second president.
Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu gave away the National Awards to 45 Teachers in New Delhi, on the occasion of Teachers’ day. The award is given as public recognition to meritorious teachers working in primary, middle and secondary schools.The awards which were instituted in 1958 carry a Silver medal, a certificate, and fifty thousand rupees.

When Radhakrishnan became the President of India in 1962, some of his students and friends requested him to let them celebrate his birthday. Mr. Radhakrishnan’s rejoinder to their call was, “I would be privileged if you celebrate my birthday as a tribute to all the teachers across the country, that is, Teachers’ Day.” They could conjecture Mr. Radhakrishnan’s the hidden love and respect for the teaching profession and since then, this day, 5th of September, has been observed as Teachers’ Day in our country.

Defence:
Indo-Kazakhstan Joint Army Exercise ‘KAZIND’ will be conducted between the Indian and Kazakhstan Army from 10 to 23 Sep 2018 in Otar region, Kazakhstan. This is the third joint military exercise between the two countries which have a history of extensive cooperation in the defence arena. The second edition of the exercise was held in India.
The aim of the exercise is to build and promote bilateral Army to Army relations and exchange skills and experiences between Kazakhstan Army and the Indian Army. The exercise will also serve as a platform for exchange of drills and procedures.

The Army has selected SpyLite mini-UAV for high-altitude aerial surveillance.The mini-UAV is built by Cyient Solutions & Systems (CSS), a joint venture between Cyient Ltd of India and BlueBird Aero Systems of Israel.
SpyLite has an endurance of 4-5 hours and a maximum flight ceiling of 30,000 feet making it ideal for operations along the border with China as well as on the Siachen glacier.

Economy:
the rupee tumbled nearly 40 paise to a record low of 71.9650 against the US dollar.Analysts said the rupee’s recovery was due to the Reserve Bank of India’s mild intervention in the forex markets. “Rupee has been consistently weak due to various factors such as inflation, strong dollar, rising crude oil prices.

Education:
Union HRD Minister Shri Prakash Javadekar released the curriculum on Experiential Learning – Gandhijis Nai Talim.This curriculum was brought out simultaneously in 13 languages i.e., Assamese, Tamil, Bengali, Odiya, Kannada, Malyalam, Punjabi, Marathi, Telugu, Gujarati, Urdu, Hindi and English in consultation with the state councils of educational research and training along with the universities in the country.Gandhiji’s Nai Talim or basic education was a holistic approach of developing body, mind and soul (hand, head and heart), by making a productive art, craft or community engagement activity as the centre of learning.Marking the occasion of Teacher’s Day, the book titled “Experiential Learning – Gandhiji’s Nai Talim is launched

Flora & Fauna:
The government has approved the continuation of the centrally-sponsored umbrella scheme of Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats (CSS-IDWH) till 2019-20.The main aim of this scheme is to boost tiger and elephant conservation efforts.The scheme consists of centrally sponsored schemes of Project Tiger (CSS-PT), Development of Wildlife Habitats (CSS-DWH) and Project Elephant (CSS-PE).

Foreign Policy:
India and Bulgaria sign four pacts on Investment, Tourism, Civil Nuclear Cooperation, science and technology cooperation and Establishment of Hindi Chair at Sofia University, after delegation-level talks between President Ramnath Kovind and his counterpart Rumen Radev.
The President also invited Bulgaria to become key partner in Defence and IT sectors under Make in India programme. A Programme of Cooperation is also signed to enhance scientific cooperation. Mr Kovind was in Bulgaria on the second leg of his 3-nation visit to Cyprus, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic. Bulgaria Capital: Sofia, Currency: Bulgarian lev.

Health_Hospitals:
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is inquiring into a matter (Case No. 77 of 2015) for alleged violation of provisions of Section 3 and 4 of the Competition Act, 2002 relating to imposition of unfair prices by private super-speciality hospitals.
Finding prima facie contravention of the provisions of the Act, the Commission referred the matter to the Director General (DG) for investigation. Pursuant to the aforesaid order of the Commission, the DG submitted the investigation report.

India_States:
The Government of India has selected 3 government schools of Haryana for the ‘Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar’ (SVP) for the year 2017-18.The SVP was instituted in 2016-17 by the Union government to recognise, inspire and celebrate excellence in water, sanitation and
hygiene practices in government elementary and secondary schools.The awards are given at the district, state and national levels.

Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) has made Aadhaar mandatory for Indian patients to register in the Tamil Nadu Network for Organ Sharing. While foreigners are asked to submit a No Objection Certificate (NoC) from the respective Embassies. Earlier, for Indian patients any identity proof, including voter’s ID, was acceptable.
The move is a measure to streamline the deceased donor transplant programme and to confirm that they have come to the State for organ transplantation. TRANSTAN has brought in a single unique ID for a patient, irrespective of the number of organs he or she registers for. It is expected that this will avoid confusion so that the hospitals cannot modify patient’s details except the activation and inactivation of patients.

International Reports:
India has improved its ranking by one spot from 2016 and now stands 19th in the ‘Theft Ranking’ for countries with weapons usable nuclear materials, according to the Nuclear Security Index The index was released by the US-based Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), which is co-chaired by Sam Nunn and Ernest Moni.Pakistan ranks 20th in the Theft Ranking for countries with weapons usable nuclear materials.Finland, New Zealand, and Sweden tied for the top ranking among countries with less than one kilogram of or no weapons- usable nuclear materials,

Industry:
An order worth Rs 9,200 crore for supply of seven Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM) systems has pushed the order book of Navratna Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) beyond 50,000 crore for the first time in history of the company. The company has entered into contracts worth about 9,200 crore with Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) to supply LRSAM systems to be fitted onboard seven ships to be built by these two shipbuilders. This is the highest-ever single value order bagged by BEL.Director (Mktg), BEL, SmtAnandi Ramalingam, signed the contracts on behalf of BEL with MDL and GRSE.

India retained the top WHO position in South-East Asia Region with DrPoonamKhetrapal Singh unanimously re-elected as Regional Director for another five-year term beginning February 2019.The elections were held at the ongoing Regional Committee meeting of WHO South-East Asia.

International Conferences:
International Women Entrepreneurs Summit 2018 was held in Kathmandu, capital of Nepal from September 3 to 5, 2018.Vice President of Nepal Nanda Bahadur Pun inaugurated the summit.The theme of 3-day event is “Equality begins with Economic Empowerment”.The main objective of the summit is to bring together achievers, women business leaders, professionals, international service providers, resource organizations, experts, government representatives and other stakeholders with a focus on innovative economic transformation through discussions and collaborations.
According to organizers the delegates from the SAARC, ASEAN, EU, Africa, Arab countries and China participating in the summit. The event is organised by the South Asian Women Development Forum..

Judiciary:
The Supreme Court deferred till further orders the commencement of the process of receiving claims and objections for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.A bench of justices Ranjan Gogoi and RF Nariman perused the report of NRC coordinator Pratik Hajela in which he said that 10 out of 15 documents provided in list A can be relied upon by a claimant for staking claim in the state’s list of citizens.The bench asked Attorney General KK Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, and other stakeholders to file
their response on the report of Hajela in two weeks and posted the matter for further hearing on September 19.
The final draft NRC list was published on July 30 in which names of 2.89 crore of the 3.29 crore people were included. The names of 40,70,707 people did not figure in the list. Of these, 37,59,630 names have been rejected and the remaining 2,48,077 are on hold.

The Supreme Court agreed to hear next week a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking stay on the Rafale fighter jet deal between India with France. The Opposition led by the Congress has been demanding a probe by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) into the jet deal.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud considered the submissions of advocate M L Sharma that his plea be listed for urgent hearing.

The Supreme Court approved a scheme that grants a compensation of minimum Rs 4 lakh and maximum Rs 7 lakh to the survivors of rape and sexual assault.The top court ruled that state governments can grant a higher compensation but not less The scheme, to be launched on October 2,in accordance with a scheme framed by the ‘National Legal Services Authority (NALSA)’ will be applicable across India. All trial courts will now apply the scheme when hearing rape cases At present grant to rape survivors varies from Rs 10,000 in Odisha to Rs 10 lakh in Goa.

The Supreme Court on ordered that minor survivors of rape or sexual assault will get compensation on par with women victims.The apex court extended the National Legal Services Authority’s (NALSA) compensation scheme for women rape and sexual assault survivors to minor children.Minor survivors of rape or sexual assault will get compensation on par with women victims. National Legal Services Authority’s (NALSA) compensation scheme for women rape and sexual assault survivors shall be extended to minor children.
Special Judges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act should disburse compensation to minor victims of sex abuse as per the NALSA’s ‘Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault/Other Crimes-2018’.
The NALSA scheme provides a uniform payment of ₹ 5 lakh to a maximum ₹ 10 lakh for “loss of life” and to gang rape survivors in any part of the country.Among other categories, if a victim suffers the loss of foetus, that is, by miscarriage as a result of assault or loss fertility, the NALSA scheme offers a compensation of ₹ 2 lakh to 3 lakh.The scheme provides a victim of acid attacks, in case of disfigurement of face, would get a minimum compensation of ₹ 7 lakh, while the upper limit would be ₹ 8 lakh. In acid attack cases, if the injury was more than 50%, a minimum compensation of ₹ 5 lakh would be given, while the maximum would be ₹ 8 lakh.
The NALSA scheme would be made applicable to minor victims from October 2 until the Centre frames compensation guidelines under the POCSO.

Justice Arup Kumar Goswami was appointed as the acting Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. His appointment will come into effect from September 6, 2018, following the retirement of high court Chief Justice Ajit Singh.

The National Green Tribunal has formed a monitoring committee headed by a former high court judge to prepare a time-bound action plan on groundwater recharge in the national capital.The committee will be headed by Justice (retd) S P Garg and comprise one representative each from the Delhi Jal Board, Central Pollution Control Board, Central Ground Water Authority and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) concerned

Labor & Employment:
The Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) has approved a proposal by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) to increase the wages of artisans by over 36%, from Rs 5.50 per hank previously to Rs 7.50 per hank. The proposal for an increase in wages to khadi spinners along with payment of government subsidy — Modified Market Development Assistance (MMDA) — has been approved with effect from August 15, 2018. Under the MMDA programme, 30% of the prime cost is paid to the khadi institutions as production subsidy. Of this 30%, 40% goes to artisans as wage incentives and the remaining 60% goes to the khadi institutions. The wage incentives are paid by KVIC directly to the accounts of the artisans through direct benefit transfer. As a result, if an artisan makes 20 hanks in a day — he will get Rs 150 per day as wage at the rate of Rs 7.50 per hank, plus incentives including MMDA, which would be approximately 35% on Rs 150, that is Rs 52.

Polity:
Rajasthan Congress president Sachin Pilot has promised a monthly allowance of ₹3,500 to unemployed educated persons if the party forms the government following the assembly elections.

Public Administration:
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the establishment and operationalization of permanent campus of seven new Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) at Amritsar, Bodh Gaya, Nagpur, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Vishakhapatnam and Jammu, and their recurring expenditure at a total cost of Rs 3775.42 crore (Rs 2999.96 crore asNon-Recurring and Rs 775.46 Crore as Recurring Expenditure). These IIMs were established in the year 2015-16/2016-17. These institutes are presently functioning from transit campuses.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved continuation of the Centrally Sponsored Umbrella Scheme of Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats (CSS-IDWH)beyond the 12thPlan period from 2017-18 to 2019-20. The Scheme consists of Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Project Tiger (CSS-PT), Development of Wildlife Habitats (CSS-DWH) and Project Elephant (CSS-PE). The total outlay is Rs. 1731.72 crore as central share (Rs. 1143 crore for Project Tiger, Rs. 496.50 crore for Development of Wildlife Habitats and Rs.92.22 crore for Project Elephant) from 2017-18 to 2019-20.
A total of 18 tiger range States, distributed in five landscapes of the country would be benefitted under the Project Tiger scheme.
Similarly, for other two schemes, the coverage is entire country in case of Development of Wildlife Habitats (DWH) and 23 elephant range States for Project Elephant. It would foster wildlife conservation in general with specific inputs for tiger in Project Tiger area and elephant in Project Elephant area.

Schemes:
The government decided to make the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) an open-ended scheme, meaning that it will continue indefinitely. The PMJDY was launched in August 2014 for a period of four years as a national mission for financial inclusion.The government has decided to double the overdraft facility from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000

Tourism:
Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned the project “Development of Rural Circuit: Malanad Malabar Cruise Tourism Project’ in Kerala under Swadesh Darshan Scheme for Rs. 80.37 Crores. The project focuses on development of water based thematic cruise experiences in and around Valapattanam and Kuppam Rivers of Kannur District. The three thematic cruises developed under the project are as follows:
a) Malabari Cuisine and Culinary Cruise in Valapattanam River (Muthappan Cruise) – Cruise starts from Valapattanam to Munambu Kadavu
in Valapattanam River with an effective Cruise Length of 40 km.
b) yyam Cruise in Valapattanam River – Cruise starts from Valapattanam to Pazhayangadi in Valapattanam River with an effective length of 16 km.
c) Mangrove Cruise in Kuppam River – Cruise starts from Pazhayangadi to Kuppam in Kuppam River with an effective Cruise length of 16 km.

Transport:
The arrival of first vessel ‘PennaSuraksha’ carrying 25,000 tonnes of cement from Krishnapatnam marks the beginning of operations of the 4th cement terminal at Cochin Port. This modal shift in transport of cement from road/rail to sea is another step towards promoting coastal shipping as cost-effective & environment-friendly means of transportation as envisaged under the SagarmalaProgramme of Ministry of Shipping. Cement being a high-volume, low-value product, lower-cost sea transport is very important as a game changer in logistics.

India is reportedly set to purchase 18 bullet trains from Japan at a cost of ₹7,000 crore in a deal where the seller will also have to transfer technology for local production. Further, each train will have 10 coaches and have cruising speeds of 350 kmph. Japan has loaned ₹88,000 crore to India for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route planned for 2022

A study by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has found that after the fare hike last year, Delhi metro has become the second-most unaffodable transport network in the world after Hanoi in Vietnam.
The affordability is defined as the percentage of commuters’ total income spent on travel. Last year, the Metro fares almost doubled after two hikes in May and October. The maximum fares escalated from Rs 30 to Rs 50 and  then to Rs 60.

Tributes:
Bhagwatikumar Sharma (31 May 1934 – 5 September 2018) was a Gujarati language author and journalist from India. Born in Surat and educated in languages, he edited a daily for several years. He wrote novels, short stories, poetry, essays and criticism. He received Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1984 and Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988.

He wrote his first poem, on event of Mahatma Gandhi’s death, on 31 January 1948. In 1951, his two sonnets were published for the first time in Gujaratmitra, a daily published from Surat. In 1953, he recited his poem for first time in the poet meet. He joined the editing department of Gujarat Mitra in 1955. He served as the trustee of Kavi Narmad Yugavart Trust and vice-president of Narmad Sahityasabha, Surat. He also served as president of the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad from 2009 to 2011

Payel Chakraborty (1988-2018) was Indian TV and film actress in Bengali Industry.She started in shows like Ek Masher Sahitya “Chokher Tara Tui” and “Goenda Ginni”. She had recently moved to films.She was found dead in her hotel room in Siliguri

3rd ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Conference on ‘Global Ageing and Human Rights of Older Persons’ held in Seoul, KoreaThe Conference will reaffirm the universal value of the human rights of older persons, share information on discrimination against the elderly and exemplary cases of long-term and palliative care in Asia and Europe, and also discuss operation and tasks of the ASEM Global Ageing Centre as an implementing institution for mutual cooperation among ASEM members for the protection and promotion of the human rights of older persons.

International Events:

In Japan the worst storm ‘Typhoon Jebi’ to hit the country in 25 years. Jebi has left a trail of destruction across the west of the country, hitting major cities like Kyoto and Osaka. Evacuation advisories have been issued for more than 1.2 million people

Maryland-based Lockheed Martin, an American security and aerospace giant, announced that the wings of its F-16 fighter jets will be produced in India. For this project, the Lockheed Martin Corporation has entered into an agreement with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL).This move is to boost the Centre’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. To make this project successful Lockheed has offered to move its entire F-16 manufacturing base to India. India is yet to make a decision on it.

World’s richest man Jeff Bezos-led e-commerce major Amazon became the 2nd publicly traded US company to hit $1 trillion in market capitalisation after iPhone maker Apple.
Amazon stock has more than doubled in the last 12 months and has gained more than 70% in 2018.

British voters would vote 59-41 to stay in the European Union if given the option, according to a new opinion poll. In the 2016 referendum, 17.4 million voters or 51.9% of the votes cast backed leaving the EU while 16.1 million voters or 48.1% of votes cast backed staying. Britain is due to leave the EU on March 29, 2019.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said India’s purchase of a Russian missile defence system and Iranian oil will be a part of the India-US 2+2 dialogue, but it won’t be the “primary focus”. Pompeo and US’s Defence Secretary James Mattis will have the dialogue
